How we started
After graduating from Syracuse University, Jason Calfo began his career working for the world-renowned design firm, Herb Lubalin Associates, where he became production editor of U&lc., the marketing publication of The International Typeface Corporation. There he met his future wife, Janet, who was editorial manager of U&lc. and the studio’s traffic manager. The couple then joined Carnase Inc., and World Typeface Center, helping to expand the firm and promote WTC’s typefaces via Ligature magazine. After several years they co-founded Calfo Aron, which grew to be a prominent corporate design and branding firm in New York City. Thirteen years later, Calfo Ives was formed — focusing on video and web design for the book and magazine publishing industries.
The assignments and publications Jason worked on afforded him the opportunity to learn from some of the greatest designers and art directors of all time — Paul Rand, George Lois, and his mentor, Herb Lubalin. They were the design elite. They were visionaries who used linguistics and their design intellect to shape an industry. The experience taught Jason how to design and execute a concept with a better command of: expressive typography, solid graphics, great imagery, and the right headline and copy.
Jason is a member of the AIGA and an adjunct instructor at Mount Ida College (School of Design). He taught typography for 12 years at Pratt Graduate School and developed and taught a public outreach design course for non-profit organizations at Syracuse’s S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications for 8 years.
